Question by AJ: What about the utility and usefulness of social networking sites-Twitter/Facebook.LinkedIN seems different?
Personally think upwards of 60 -70% of the matter on Facebook and Twitter is useless and a distraction, leads to lower productivity and a lot of other losses to individuals and society. They certainly do have utility for wide broadcasting, information gathering (like for news media) and grass-roots movements like the Iran opposition was able to muster. But for everyday networking, that is another question and wonder if you would be better off not using facebook and twitter much but for apps described above, and stick to groups like on LinkedIn where there is much better utility in terms of return on time spent.

Your nickel!

IT depends on what you’re doing on those particular platforms.

I started my FB back in 04 or 05 when I was still in college – it was a way to keep in touch with classmates I hadn’t seen that semester. Now EVERYONE has a FB and it’s great to keep up with people from your past. But yes, it is distracting with all the apps on it.

I have a LinkedIn account,as well as a MyWorkster but I use those for professional purposes only, as do most people.
