i use twitter on my cell phone (no apps just through text message) and i can send my updates to my own profile, but how do i send a reply message to one of my friends through a text?

Follow the same process as sending a twitter update. For a public reply, just use the @userid syntax. eg. @myfriend way kool!
If you want to send a private message through twitter, the syntax is different. Send the message to the same twitter number, but the format is “D userid” eg. D myfriend you are so kool i can only send this privately.
