Question by originalkoer: How does a device track through wifi?
Certain apps on my ipod touch, such as Google maps, Twitter, etc, have the option of tracking your location through a your wi-fi signal. How does this work?

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) knows where your wireless router based of the fact that they run a wire into your house. This information is available from your ISP and accessible by websites.

Actually it isn’t tracking you through your wifi connection. What it is most likely doing is taking tower transmission data from the cell towers near by. By taking one or more of these towers it can triangulate approximately where you are and then send that data through your wifi connection to produce a map.

If its using GPS its doing something similar just with satellites in orbit.
