Question by huh?!: The Internet as a communication tool – how do YOU use it?
Hi there

For a project in my Society and Culture class, I’ve chosen to research the topic of “how the internet affects the way people communicate”. For this project I have to do some of my own research, and considering my topic, I thought posing such a question online would be a great chance to get some insightful answers…well, lets hope so anyway 😉

So basically what I’m asking is this – how do YOU communicate differently online to how you would face to face with someone? And do you prefer this method of communication over face to face? If so, why?

I also need to consider how and why internet usage differs between younger and older generations – what different generations use the internet for.

Think about communication through networking sites like Facebook/ Twitter/ MySpace, instant messengers, email, message boards/forums, etc

Answers as soon as possible would be GREATLY appreciated, and of course , I will not publish any personal information about Answerers, as this would be considered “unethical” and would probably lose me a whole bunch of marks!

Thanks!

I use the internet as a source of knowledge and entertainment.

I prefer voice communication, mostly face to face but just over the phone is fine as well. When communicating on the internet or in a text form it loses a lot of the personality.

I have a harder time getting out what i want to say online, its easier when i am speaking out loud to the person. this is because i use my hands to talk a lot, and you cant really stumble and pause and say um, you know, like….etc. its harder to come across a point when you are limited to typing out words. sometimes i will say things via online or text that i wouldnt say in person. for example: flirting. id be a little more out there with it because im not face to face with the person. i prefer online communication because you can plan out what you want to say and think about it more. but i also prefer face to face because its more real, and i can use my hands like hand motions to talk and describe things.

i tihnk younger generations use the internet for things like social networking, (facebook, myspace, twitter…etc) msn with friends, games, simply to waste time, and for a hobby, such as answering questions on Y!A (lol) or being an active member in some kind of forum. also, school work and researching for academic purposes.
older generastions use it for emailing, work, looking up things, and sometimes to keep an eye on their hildren (the younger generation. O.o)

To read and consume as much information as possible.Researching and looking to understand the latest technological breakthroughs in science and physics.Reading and learning new languages.Reading and studying as many online news reports from all over the globe, then seeing if I can verify their source as to whether the information is correct or not.Newspapers are coming to an end.Blogs are interesting as well as the other available media,it give you ideas and with a free exchange of information and opinion about world events, people have a better sense of what is going on around them.I hope this helps.

    Hey!

I am 17 and I use to live in South-Africa… Well there internet is useless to us, cause I was always with all my buddy’s hanging out, and the world don’t matter to us.. and that’s kinda how most people are in SA but that’s fine, cause we don’t really care! Now don’t think we are way back in technology haha no we are not, it just don’t matter!

But 7 months ago I moved to Malaysia.. ugh what a mess! haha So now I am spending most of my time catching up with my friends back in SA. I use Facebook, msn, blogs, and email. But I find it easier to talk face to face. I am not shy or anything, I am myself online or face to face!

Good luck with the project/ whatever! Enjoy!
